FAQ

What does “Phi Theta Kappa” stand for?

These are the Greek words meaning wisdom, aspiration, and purity.

What is the difference between Phi Theta Kappa and Alpha Pi Theta?

Phi Theta Kappa is the name of the international organization.  When a two-year college obtains a charter from the international headquarters in Jackson, Mississippi, the charter is assigned a local chapter name.  At Brookdale Community College, the local chapter name is Alpha Pi Theta.

Where is Alpha Pi Theta located on campus?

The chapter office is located in the Clubs and Organizations Room in the Student Life Center, room SLC 109.  Alpha Pi Theta’s cubicle is back against the wall facing the door.

How may I contact the officers?

The office telephone number is [732] 224-2427.  This telephone is primarily unmanned but is equipped with a voicemail system so that if someone is not in the office to answer your call, you may leave a message at any time.  These messages are routinely checked and are constantly being routed to the specific individual for whom they are intended.  In addition to the telephone system, the officers of Alpha Pi Theta have set up a Brookdale-affiliated email alias at ptk@brookdalecc.eduAll members are strongly encouraged to visit the office and utilize the means of communication offered whenever they wish.  Office hours for all officers are posted on the website as well as on the Alpha Pi Theta bulletin board in the Alpha Pi Theta office itself.

When are the chapter meetings?

In order to accommodate all of our members, we conduct four meetings each month.  Two meetings are scheduled during daytime hours and the others are held during the evening.  The exact time and date of such meetings can be found within the chapter newsletter, on the website, and on the calendar posted in the office.

Can I make suggestions for activities that would involve the chapter?

Yes!  All members are encouraged to participate in the decision-making process.  The officers and advisors welcome any suggestions you may have regarding activities.  We also encourage members to join the various committees responsible for planning and implementing chapter functions.

What are the requirements for membership into Phi Theta Kappa?

Membership into Phi Theta Kappa is by invitation only.  All applicants must be matriculated into a degree program, have completed a minimum of 12 college credits excluding developmental courses, have a cumulative grade point average of 3.70 or better, be enrolled in at least one college credit course this term, and pay the induction fee by the deadline specified during the Alpha Pi Theta New Member Orientation.

Who do I make my check out to?

All checks must be made payable to Brookdale Community College.  The following information must also appear on all checks:

1.      Your NAME and ADDRESS.  [If the check is from someone else’s account, your name must also appear on it.]

2.      Your STUDENT ID NUMBER.  [This is for school use only.]

3.      Your PHONE NUMBER.

**PLEASE DO NOT DATE THE CHECK**

If I cannot join now, can I join later?

All eligible students will receive two invitations to join Phi Theta Kappa [one per semester] as long as they are enrolled as Brookdale students and their GPA remains at 3.7 or higher.

Once I have been initiated into the chapter as a member, is there any way I can lose my membership?

Members must maintain a cumulative grade point average of 3.35.  If one’s grade point average drops below 3.35, the member will be placed on probationary status for the succeeding term.  If, after the completion of the succeeding term, that member fails to increase his/her grade point average to 3.35 or above, the member will be dropped from the membership rolls at both the chapter and international level.  Members must also maintain good standing within the moral and ethical confines of all local, state and federal laws.  Any member convicted of a felony will be dropped from the membership rolls at both the chapter and international level.

If I decide to join Phi Theta Kappa, when and where will the formal induction ceremony take place?

A formal announcement bearing the time, date and location of the next Alpha Pi Theta Induction Ceremony will be sent prior to the ceremony itself.  This information will also be available on the website.
